so i have my 68 beetle with 73 1600DP and IRS transaxle and 2-3 years ago reverse started to pop out of gear and now i can push it better backwards.. so my question is i came up on an early model IRS trans and want to replace my currently installed late model trans.. the only thing ive really been able to look up is that the throw out bearing is different.. what issues will i come across swapping? can i get the late model fork and throwout to go into the early trans or do i need a new pressure plate?

Tranny swap

The problem I see is the TOB sleeve that bolts to the late tranny right over the output shaft seal. 3, 10mm bolts. If possible, you might be able to get the TOB collar for your pressure plate, I'm assuming your existing pp is the diaphram type, if You can get the collar, all you would need is a new early model TOB. One more thing, some of the early transmissions had the three holes drilled and tapped 6 x 1.0 but no sleeve was attached. look in there, you might get lucky.
