Flooded remote key control on 2002 VW Cabrio

My wife parked her 2002 VW Cabrio (with top up) in a mall. It rained hard and when she got back, she found her car submerged with about two feet of water. She called me and I found inside water level about three inches deep. I drove it home and used a wet/dry vacuum to siphon off water.
I noticed that the car's horn was chirping about three times now and then.
Eventually, it didn't chirp anymore.
I check the remote key and it didn't work anymore. It would lock nor unlock the car. The second spare remote key didn't work either and this confirms that the remote keys are good, but the system didn't work anymore.
The horn still works though.
What do I need to do to make the system work again? Is the remote control module burned out? Can it be replaced by me?
