Better call before going into it to deep.I don't want to see you have more problems down the road later.

Just did a clutch on a buddy's 86 gti- twice. First time the wrong flywheel was supplied. It was deeper and although it bolted up, it scraped a shaving off the inside of the bellhousing. After the second time a strange noise was heard when the clutch was engaged and would not fully disengage when the pedal was depressed. Pulling off the access cover for the release bearing assembly I noticed a sort of retaining ring with three prongs that appears to clip onto the 5th gear syncro. Well, it was dislodged and in three pieces!
Can someone tell me what exactly this piece is and what it does? Could the extra load applied by the flywheel striking the bellhousing have caused this? Input appreciated...
