most people here are from the us and we didn't have any carberated mk2's. Maybe some of the mk1 guys might be able to help. some of the early mk1's were crbed. Good luck

With the choke engaged, the throttle is held open by the "high idle cam" (fancy name for that stepped thingy), and the engine gets air thru the venturi instead of just the bypass, so it get fuel from the throttle circuit instead of just the idle circuit. Once the choke warms up and the throttle closes, the engine has to run on the idle circuit only. Maybe there is a problem with that cam, have you tried adjusting the idle, or mixture screws? It might just be time for a new carb!
