I replaced my timing belt 10k ago and it went without a hitch and I didn't think much about it; but I started to hear a bit if noise 2k ago from that end of the engine. So, I started to inspect pulleys (sounds like a bad bearing) and discovered slackness in the Timing belt. Then, I replaced the tensioner; same noise. I've figured out it's the water pump and I currently replacing it. However, I have 3/4" flex in the timing belt; doesn't seem right. Anyone know what's the spec?

OK, I found out that when it is at the correct tension via VW manual on replacing these guys: "the belt should not flex more than 90 degrees on its longest span." Now although this method is only as accurate as the hand strength of the twister (or tester) in direct correlation to the original boilerplate tester who derived this investigative measure, it's all I could find. Odd, the Germans are usually a bit over-precise on measurements and tolerances. Anyway, I tightened it accordingly. Ah well, it seems the boys used their precision to show a bit of gray area in belt tolerance designed into their wonderful Deutsch 2.0 motor.
