I'm sure someone will correct my if I'm wrong, but:

2000-2001 1.8Ts (VW) were 150 hp with the T3 turbo. From 2002, VW has used a T3/T4 turbo hyrbid in those cars producing 180 hp.

The Audi TT has the 180 hp engine as its base engine and the 225 hp version has the larger T4 turbo. So, they both have the same engine as the TT, but in a certain form. With a chip, intake, and exhaust, any 1.8T VW engine could hit maybe 220 hp?

Don't worry, though, there's nothing bad about having a vr6!

you wont really see any benefits swapping to an audi motor.. the only difference is the 225tt because it has a ko4, other than that the rest have a k03/k03s with similar power outputs

I know 2002/2003 uses the Audi motor so it should be direct fit but 2001 is diffrent. There's lots of Audi 1.8t for sale so that would be the easyst to buy and I was hoping it would fit

they are similiar but not the same. intakes are different as well as the intercooler piping. early audi engines had sludge issues thats probably why you find alot for sale. plus the wiring harness and ecu might be different as well. best bet is to replace it with a vw 1.8t. aww or awp engine code.
