I have an 02 Beetle that runs good most of the time but occasionally when I go to start it it idles really rough and has no power. When I run the codes it says random misfires, misfire cylinder 2 and misfire cylinder 4. Usually I can clear the codes or disconnect the battery terminal and it will run fine. Anyone know most likely cause.

This issue will be hard to pinpoint just by running the codes. You may need a specialist to take a look, otherwise it will be a case of eliminating each possibility (listed a few below). By the sounds of it, it is likely to be an intermittent fault, but could be multiple issues at once.

  • Spark Plugs (oil burning and fouling plugs)/defective leads/coil packs
  • Injector fault/wear
  • Air Intake leaks/MAF sensor incorrect reading/faulty connection/dud sensor
  • Fueling Issue caused by ECU errors
Good luck with the fault finding, hope this has helped.
