I recently swapped my stock instrument cluster from my 96 Golf GL with a silver-face one from a 98 Jetta K2. The speedo, tach, temp, and fuel needles all work properly and there's even a low fuel light that works on the new one from the 98 - my old cluster didn't even have a bulb in that position. Problem is the check engine light comes on and stays on in this new cluster and all the codes are cleared on my computer - the cluster shouldn't have a memory. Also, my ABS light on the left of the headlight switch comes on and stays on the whole time. BTW my GL is before the 96.5, I don't know how it would affect the electronics between clusters. Does anybody have experience with this?

I would just leave the lights if everything is fine unless it really bugs you. You could always take the bulbs out too.

if your really worried about it you can swap out the gauge faces. did it on mine, went from the silver ones to black. took about 20 minutes or so.
