for the front and rear mounts no, you wont need to drop the trans or engine out, however for the sides at least a cherry picker would make the job real smooth, the worst one is the mount on the timing belt side
yeah mark is right. i had an 84 GTi and i had to replace the rear one. just unbolt the top bolts of all the mounts, and jack the engine up a few inches. about 5 if you can. a cherry picker would make this easy but you dont need one! good luck!
