I have a 2005 Golf that I have serviced regularly as per the recommended schedule. At the last oil change, I was told that the threads in the pan were stripped and that the pan should be replaced. Further, I was told that this is a common problem with VW oil pans, "a known design flaw".

There doesn't appear to be any discussion of such a problem that I can find on-line. I suspect that the plug was over-tightened when the oil was changed previously (the same shop has done all the oil changes for at least the last two years).

Can anyone advise me regarding this, specifically, is there any such issue with the aluminum oil pans? Second, is it fair to expect the shop to at least share some of the cost of the repair, since they've done all the oil changes?
