Iv Just bought a 98 mk3 golf near mint condition but i took it for a spin and everything was fine. when i stopped i started to smell what i thought was oil or burning oil.

we checked under the hood and wiped a few old oil spills but it still smells

can anyone tell me what it could be and how to fix it.

The valve cover gasket could be leaking down the back of the engine to the exhaust, and burning off there. Mine was leaking oil out of everything it could, so it smelled pretty bad at red lights. Just take a look at the back of the engine and see if you have some wetness.

Or if it smells more like burnt popcorn, then that is your gear oil, if you have a 5 speed. It can leak out of the inner boot of the cv shaft if the flange seal goes bad, and shoot all over the exhaust.

I would suspect that is the issue as well, the valve cover gasket needs replacing on these cars after awhile. Ive had to replace it twice on my car.
