I went onto edmunds.com and looked up a 1998 mk3 GTI and this is what i came up with.

Acceleration (0-60 mph): 10.3 sec.
Braking Distance: 133 ft.
Road Holding Index: 0.79 g
Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 2 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 115 hp
Max Horsepower: 5400 rpm
Torque: 122 ft-lbs.
Max Torque: 3200 rpm
Drive Type: FWD
Turning Circle: 32.8 ft.
And this was the same info for a 97 jetta with the 2.0

Here's the info on a 2001 2.0 jetta:

Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 2 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 115 hp
Max Horsepower: 5200 rpm
Torque: 122 ft-lbs.
Max Torque: 2600 rpm
Drive Type: FWD
Turning Circle: 35.8 ft.

The main diffrence i see is the max torque is at a lower rpm in the newer engine.
