Hi! I am new to the forums. Joined to get info on my car which is a 1998 passat 1.8 petrol non turbo 20v ADR engine. The problem is that it is eating up way too much petrol. Very uneconomical for the engine size. It also lacks power. There is no smoke, but sometimes it smells. I thought it might be the oxygen sensor, but them i have been told its the MAF sensor playing up. The other thing is that i got the car with this problem and with a sports air filter installed. Now i got to thinking this could be tied together. I have not checked the car with a computer yet (its a bit expencive for me right now). Any smart thoughts? What do i have to replace or look at to get rid of that problem? Thank you!:K:

also when i accelerate mildly everything is fine, but if i try to step on it the car seems to try dying before going forward, and it accelerates overall slower if i step on the pedal.

Hi!
So i did clean the MAF. Pointless. Start with the simple fact that it was spotless to start with. But i cleaned it anyway :D. No changes whatsoever in the cars behaviour. The wires are intact, but the sensor might be dead as a whole. is there any way to check that? Any other suggestions on my problem? One more thing - when idling it sometimes seems choking as well. The rpms go up and down slightly... I am lost:mad:
