OK, so with my 92 golf gl riding on its last leg, I have decided to do this. I am going to run the current bad engine into the ground and then replace the engine. Question is, since my job is going to covor the new engive and I wont be able to get that extravigant with it, is there a better engine than my 1.8 then aI can pop in without redoing anything (i.e. transmission, brakes). Guess what im basically asking is can i upgrade to anything better without changing anything else?

Unless you're buying a meticulously maintained 16v, don't do the swap. If money's the main factor, go with the x-flow swap and youre set. You can always boost it later.

Also, if you choose to go the x-flow route, try to get your hands on an OBD I block. (95.5 and older-they had semi-forged bottom ends.)
