My 98 Passat has 101,000 miles on it so I've decided it'd be a good time to change the timing belt. While I'm in there, I plan to change the water pump, stat, and all four front end oil seals. Here's my question. The Bentley manual mentions a whole slew of counter holders. Are they really necessary, or can I do the same thing with strap wrenches, drifts and/or levers (without damaging anything)? Also, I'm sure I can get the oil seals in place without the special guides, but getting them out might be tricky. Any suggestions? Also, how far can the front carrier be pulled forward for service? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rob
