my timing belt snapped while sitting in garage.

i have time but never replaced one

do i have to reset timing?

Yes every time you do a timing belt you have set timing, I would also recomend changing water pump.

Water pump isn't driven by the same belt. You don't have to change it then just because the belt is off.

You will have to retime it. You have the 16v or 8v?

Dont no about older vw but my jetta and most of the golf that i no of have timing belt driven water pump.

its a 1.8 sohc gas
the water pump has its own belt i think it shares with the power steering
my timing belt snapped while trying to push it after sitting for a year.

i have new timing belt and all three v belts while im having it apart

I would change the water pump you have the covers and timming belt of its only around 40.00 you ll be glad you did. it has its own belt but its way behind belt and covers just my 2cents as a license tech

Friend redone head on rabbit forever ago, no water pump replacement. 2 weeks went by and pump came apart. Destroyed everything... Start over... $$$$
