I really would interested in what you guys think about this and I am posting this as a warning to anyone considering buying a volkswagen.

I have a 1998 beetle. Since I bought this car it has been nothing but trouble. The car battery dies after the car sits for 4 days (new battery).
BUT, The latest is that the battery drains after 2 days of not driving it. Took it to the dealer and they are telling me that they found loose wiring (over $200 to repair). The day I was supposed to pick the car up the dealer calls back and says that the comfort control module (even though it still works and I have not had issues) has been damaged and this repair is over $400. This is in addition to a $100 repair for the window. Also the bulbs are out yet again (probably $80).

In 2003 I spent close to a 1000 dollars on this car. Just so you know I took the car in at the end of 2003 for a tune up ($550 for that and problems with the bulbs and vacuum lines). I do not understand why these problems were not found until now. I have been asking them to figure out this problem since 2002 (have the invoice to prove it).

This is only March of 2004 and I am looking at over 900 dollars already. I called Volkswagen customer care and their response was basically like it or lump it.

Please take my story for what it is and if you need any additional details I will be more than happy to provide them (I have most of the invoices).

At this point I feel my only recourse is to get rid of this car and with all this shoddy treatment I am not getting another volkwagen ever again and I would like to warn everyone considering a volkwagen.

I really hope all you guys have had better luck with your cars.
Thanks

Follow-up: Thank you all for your suggestions. I really do appreciate them.
But I would like to clarify a few things. I have been to 4 different dealers with this car (in 2 very different cities). I do understand things happen with a car, but I did buy the car because I assumed that volkswagen would stand behind their product. I have contacted them repeatedly about these problems and the company is not interested.

I have learned some valuable lessons from this experience and I just want people to know. Is my case rare? I am sure it is and unfortunately this had to be my bad luck with my car, but if one other person can benefit even a little bit from my experience I will be happy.

I am really happy for everyone that loves their car and I hope they continue to be happy.

Thanks again for listening (I apologize to the people who feel my post is inappropriate, but I have found vwforum to be helpful in the past when needing info).

And in the interest of telling the truth I seriously doubt I will be able to get over this and try another volkwagen. I have found the dealers and the company to be lacking (to put it as nicely as I can).

Good luck.

I'm not sure who you are warning - about 95% of the people here already own a VW or else they wouldnt' be in the forum. And those that don't have a VW either have an Audi or are really into vw/audi cars and want one. I think most people here would say they have had positive experiences with their cars - I know I have. I've had a couple minor warranty repairs but otherwise I find the car to be very solid and I haven't had any problems. I'm sorry to hear you got a lemon - I don't realy know a lot about the vw bugs....

Thanks for posting this in an intelligent manner.

We are all aware of the horror stories, some far worse then yours, we read online about vws and more importantly vw dealers.

I hope things work out for you.

its a shame that your vdub expeirence was a bad one but like everyone has been saying it could happen with any car or product for that matter.
i also have to ask as i am not up to date with bettle info. what was the frist year for the new bug? if it was 98 that would explain alot. i really hope you see this for the rare occasion that it is and hope you dont think all vw products are manufactured the same way. but i think if my first one was a money pit... i might feel the same. it also sounds like the "dealer/ repair shop" you have been going to is not the best in your area! i would try to find another one... remember the closest isn't always the best, and they are only as good as their personnel!

Im sorry you have had such a rotten experience. I have always been concerned witht eh Beetles b/c of their Mexican origin, but so far, other than a lot of annoying rattles, ours has been pretty reliable. We were fortunate enough to get a German motor though (yay me for being a stickler) and I credit that with alot.

I hope, as everyone else has said, that you don't write off all VW's b/c of this experience.

My uncle got a Toyota pickup new, and had the motor replace in the first six months, had to have the dash cluster replaced twice in the first year, and finally was able to lemon law the thing when the third transmission went out after 14,000 miles. Now I know that this is irregular for a Toyota, and he has had several before, and the identical one they replaced it with has now been running strong for four years. Sometimes its just the luck of the draw.

Wasn't '98 the first year of the new beetles? Because usually the first production run of a new car will have the most problems. As time goes by the manufacturer will incorporate changes to fix the bugs that they find..Believe me it happens to all car makers, I work for Toyota as a tech, and I've seen plenty of horror stories. And that is on a car line that is considered one of the most reliable...

I would like to add that this happens to all manufactures not just VW. Secondally I must point out or ask you said it's a 1998...that would be used correct? How many miles were on the vechicle? Could it be a lemon? Maybe? What type of warrinty was offerred if any.

These are the questions I fire back in sticking up for the VW name. As always buyer beware in purchase cars. Also sounds like the service dept at that "dealer" is a poor one. I hope you have better luck in the future. Sorry to hear that this experience was not so good.

Wow, that's a horror story! Sorry your 'dub experience was so bad. But like db said, it's something that can happen with any manufacturer's product.

There are some ways to try and get restitution, such as with the lemon law if it applies. Plenty of things online about it.

Also ANYTIME purchasing a used car, always hit Carfax.com, it's worth the $15.00

I hope you can get your situation is resolved to your satisfaction. I also thank you for presenting your opinion in a manner that's non-threatening.

Best of luck with your next vehicle!

If I'm not mistaken, haven't there been numerous reported problems with the Beetles? Sorry for your problems, but it seems to be the specific model rather than VW in general that seems to suffer said problems. Nonetheless, best of luck in the future with any new car you purchase. Like stated earlier, though, this occurs with any make unfortunately.

I had a 96 Jetta GL for about 3+ years. I got rid of it because I was paying too much to keep it running, so I sold it. I traded it in for my 2000 GTI VR6, and have had to have just a few things repaired/replaced in it in the 2 years I have had it. I am very happy with my new dub, and will continue to support vw. I would def not goto a dealership for regular service. They charge way too much. Find a local garage that works on vws-a shop that is strickly vw would be the best, but if not, find a respectable garage and good luck.

I despise customer care and I do not like the dealerships. It is always a rip-off game at the dealership (I understand they want to maximize their profits, but there is a limit).

AND everyone I have spoken to at customer care has been unhelpful. I do not think I am out of line when I say this is your product stand behind it. If they had been just a bit more understanding and proactive I would not be posting this, but they are not interested. One of the women was trying to tell me that I do not understand how the diagnostics work and if the problem was not caught before it means it is a new problem, but with the same old manifestations.

I do not need to be spoken to as if I am an idiot by the dealer(s) (who miraculously bring their prices down as soon as I say no way am I paying that much (this happened at two dealerships)) and by customer care. I do not hate my car, stuff happens and I do not have a problem that it happened to me, but I would like to think that if I were selling a prouct and that if i mistakenly sold someone a sub-par item that I would be fair and helpful in resolving the matter.

Customer care does not listen and the dealers.....

I can only suggest that you buy a new car..I doubt that another VW is in your future, you seem to be past the breaking point with your dub. Your screen name is "IRATE" so I doubt any of us will be able to talk you down, however you should understand that most of us are very happy with the overall VW ownership experience...
