ID.7 (and probably other ID cars as well) only charge the 12V battery when driving, and drain the 12V battery when parked

My 3 month old ID.7 didn't want to drive last week, because the 12V battery was drained during normal parking.
The car had to be trucked away and the 12V battery charged....
For some strange reason the 400V driving battery had no transformer to charge the 12V battery.
And the 12V battery drains in a couple of weeks of no driving, without any pre-warning or level indication on the display.
It means that when you don't use the car on a weekly basis, every time you want to use it, it may not want to drive.
Not an pleasant situation for such an expensive and brand new car...
I want to suggest the VW makers to add the missing transformer between the drive battery and the 12V battery, so it charges continuously.
And to add a level indicator for it on the display under Car Status.

Have an ID7 now for 7 months. Battery has been replaced after 4 months, 3 months later same issue.. great.. somehow they're not in a hurry to fix this issue for their 'flagship'. How difficult can it be to do an over the air software update. Just do it VW, or should we all buy a Tesla or BYD. At least they know something about IT. Btw there is no missing transformer..

Im having the exact same issue. ID7 is 7 months old and just had new 12v battery fitted which solved all the 12v problems we were having, but after only couple of weeks I notice that keyless entry doesnt always work and the app sometimes wont let me pre heat the car because it says 12v battery low. Doesnt happen every day but sometimes. So I suspect it will only get worse and no doubt I will need another new 12v battery in 3 months time just like you.

Yes, same here. Keyless entry doesnt work anymore car is always offline and preheating doesnt work because 12v battery is low. This occurs every morning. Mine will go back to the dealer in January to be looked at.. I'm sure they will solve it at some point. Just don't understand why it needs to take so long.

Ive set mine to start pre heating when door unlocked, so now all i need do is unlock the car first thing in the morning, which starts it heating and as i understand it this also triggers the drive battery to start charging the 12v battery so its then all set to go when im ready. Not ideal but will do while i wait to get it back to the dealer.

Same issue here. Battery replaced, no diff. It has been at the dealer 4 times already, on of which for 3 days! They have no idea. The things already tried:
1. replacing the 12V
2. ful reset of the entertainment system
3. removing car and app from account and back to factory default
4. it makes no difference if the setting "optimized battery use" is on or off. This setting should have the car use the high voltage battery to stay online
5. it has nothing to do with the sim-card or region, happens everywhere, not only at home

The only concern I have is that, in a lot of cases, (in other forums) I read that ppl have additional stuff connected, like anti-marten system, or, in my case a dash-cam. However, my dashcam is set to only turn on when driving, so it should take zero out of the 12v. My concern is that the sensor software, of the condition of the 12v is too sensitive for that? People here that have the same issues but no additional stuff connected? I'd love to know to exclude the dash-cam.

Some stuff on the symptoms:
A. After a drive, it is unpredictable how fast the ID7 goes offline.
B. Sometimes, I perceive it to be faster if the car was locked, I happen to approach with key-less and do NOT enter/use the car but just happen to walk past. It then seems to go off-line faster?
C. When off-line, keyless also does not work, nor trying to open the normal doors... BUT the trunk door does open!?????
D. When off-line, the app shows the error in a black bottom bar saying the car has no internet connection. When, at such time, you try to set anything, the app says that the 12v does not have enough energy to allow app usage.
E. Even though there is ample mobile coverage, when off-line, when you get in the car and turn it on, it can take minutes for the car to get online again. However, there are various levels of " online":
E1. When offline, the world globe kind of icon is grayed out. But... the app still receives the last update the car gave earlier, on charge remaining in the High voltage battery
E2. After up to 4 minutes, the car will be online again, and, depending in your settings first simply online (with the globe turned on) and next including the "A" to include positioning data as well

That brings me to the conclusion that the car really turns off the sim / connection.

Again, very interested to hear if ppl have the same symptoms WITHOUT extra stuff like anti-marten or a dash installed? Thanks

I think I had this last night with my id7 (5.0 software) only driven about 400-500 miles in last month since taking ownership. I have an electricity supplier (Octopus) that controls charging intelligently, but last night the connection failed during the night and I saw the car had gone offline in the app with 12v errors on the mobile services menu. I suspect the constant communication from Octopus contributed to the 12v draining. I’ve had heard of this occurring with drivers of with a previous ev I owned (Kia e-Niro). I haven’t driven too much over the last few weeks so I suspect it may have suffered in the cold spell. Hoping that a few longer drives will keep it charged enough, but only time will tell. Otherwise it may be a bad 12v and need replacing.

Battery has now been replaced for the second time, dealer said that it's probably due to a bad batch which doesn't make sense of course. I don't have anything extra connected to the car. And the first problems startled to occur in the summer of 2024 so I don't see the relationship with temperature. Also optimized battery usage has always been active in my case... Really don't understand why it needs to take so long to solve this issue.. with this issue the car is not at all reliable..

Update: mine is at the dealer for 4 days now. In my view it is not the battery (which has already been replaced). And the setting "optimized battery use" should do more than just use the HV power to keep the car online longer. What I believe to be the problem is a number of software settings. The 12V is "protected" by sensors. The software has thresholds set which, when the 12V crosses the threshold, takes the car off-line. Even when the HV tops the 12V back up, those thresholds, better the "switch" that thinks it should be offline, is not reset by the software. That only happens in either of the following cases:
  1. Extra charging
  2. Opening the car with the key (as key-less also does not work in this situation)
It then takes approximately 2-4 minutes for the ID7 to be online again. Which one can clearly see in the car, looking at the "globe".

So my conclusion is that the threshold for the car to go offline is higher than a similar threshold switch for the car to use the HV to top off the 12V. And that when topped, the software switch is not reset until one of the two things mentioned, happen.

I believe they are stringing you along. My ID7 is at the dealer for the 10th (working) day in a row, today, it still doesn't work even after (again) replacing the 12V and loads of useless tests. I've checked the same story in US, CA and DE forums. It is all the same story. The 12V gets replaced one or even two times. However, in my opinion, (just like it was for the same issues when the ID4 came out) it is not the hardware. It is purely software. See my earlier post above. All these dealers are at the mercy of first the regional import role and, when they can't handle it, the factory. That's where all these cases are at, currently. And for some reason, even the factory is making the dealers try useless things whilst waiting for the software update.

Hi there, I've an Id.7 pro 2024 and I'm facing the same reported issues: problem with 12 volt battery, no keyless working and no internet or connection between app and car. Moreover, I've enable the battery optimisation in the app as well but not effects or at least not the result I wanted. I'm currently using software version 4 as I cannot see any 5.0.2 update yet OtA

Two months after purchase, 2025 VW I.D. Buzz, with 1,080 miles. Car driven every day, and this appears in on the screen: "!2V battery is discharging, Please switch on the vehicle." Car won't turn on but all the 12V systems seem to be operational. Screen changes to: "Error: 12V power supply. Please service vehicle." Car would not jump start. I tried to charge the 12V battery and charger quickly went to green showing full charge on battery. Car has been at the dealer for 2 weeks with no positive diagnosis. Service rep tells me I should be prepared to wait a long time since they have had another 2025 Buzz in the shop for 6 weeks with the same problem and no help for VW corporate to isolate the problem.

I also have a late 2024 ID7 and I'm also having problems with my 12V battery. I've already taken it to the garage twice. I ended up buying a small battery monitor (BM2).

My conclusion is that the voltage drops occur after the car has finished charging, but it's still plugged in. You can clearly see the voltage drops after charging in the image at around 12:30 a.m., I think.

The car clearly detected that the battery was too low around 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and recharged it. Maybe it was already too late for the system. I was sleeping and I did not try to open the app on my phone !

At 8 a.m., I disconnected everything and now I'm manually charging the battery.

Nevertheless, sometimes, I have noticed that some battry drains, soft and slow while the car was off.

Just got a brand-new id 7 Pro S. It has 12v battery problems already at the dealer but said I could drive with it and I had to come in later for a software/coding solution as it was Saturday and the mechanics weren't around. They did check the 12v battery, which was fine. So sure I don't mind the yellow warning light then. Sunday I had to call roadside help to unlock the doors and start it as it had the exact symptoms as mentioned earlier in this thread. Also, the car alarm was going off which sort is annoying for me and my neighbors. P.S park assist won't activate either.

Anyway roadside help did a jumpstart which freaked the system more or less out (also mind you the roadside help drive id3, and they know about all the problems) So he then disconnects the battery and reconnected and everything booted and all the errors (and park assist suddenly worked) were gone for at least 1 till 2 hours until i charged it again (advise from road side help) then the connection dropped and suddenly got the 12v error again.

Are there anyway thread updates or software updates where this problem has/is solved, or does the dealer need to do some coding magic as mentioned above by setting the threshold lower ? And is there no way to do that myself, to at least be able to drive ?

This is an analysis compiled bij chat gpt using data from numerous websites and forums, both in Europe and the United States. In the U.S., a recall has been initiated for vehicles equipped with the exact same hardware as the latest series of the ID.7 with the MEB platform. I am not a technician and cannot say for certain whether it is true, but it sounds plausible, and official documents seem to support the theory.

AC Charging in the ID.7: Weak 12V Battery Due to Known OCDC Error?

What does the analysis show?

  • The VW ID.7 uses the exact same on-board charger unit (11 kW OBC with integrated DC/DC converter – OCDC) as the ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron.
  • For these models (ID.4 / Q4), an official recall campaign is currently ongoing: 25V125 (internal VW campaign code 93CJ), due to condensation forming on the OCDC board, leading to failure of the 12V charging system.
  • No public recall exists yet for the ID.7, but there is an internal TPI (technical product information) 2072849, and dealers are already replacing the OCDC or 12V battery when issues are reported.
  • Several drivers report receiving the warning “12V battery weak,” even though the vehicle is constantly connected to an 11 kW wallbox.
  • Issues occur particularly when the charging cable remains plugged in after charging ends or when scheduled charging (timer) is used.

What happens technically during AC charging at home (11 kW)?

Phase 1: Charging active

  • During active AC charging, the OCDC converts high voltage (400 V) from the battery into 12 V and powers all control units.

Phase 2: Charging completed – Plug remains inserted

  • Many wallboxes keep the car “awake” via PLC communication, especially when departure times are set.
    • → The HV (high-voltage) relays open, DC/DC converter function stops.
    • → Control units, gateway, and comfort systems continue drawing power from the 12V battery.

Phase 3: So-called “parasitic discharge”

  • Within 24–48 hours, voltage drops below ~11.8 V:
    • • App warning: “12V battery too weak, no online connection.”
    • • Keyless entry / door handles become unresponsive.
    • • Start attempt triggers: “Error: 12V battery discharged – Visit workshop.”

Why some vehicles are affected overnight

  • Hardware defect: Moisture or electromigration damages the OCDC (same issue as in Recall 25V125).
  • Software bug: ID.7 with software version 4.x disables the DC/DC converter too early or fails to enter deep sleep mode reliably.
  • High standby power consumption: e.g., due to OTA download, heat pump, or aftermarket dongles.

What can you do?

  1. Have TPI checked and test the OCDC:
    • Ask your dealer whether your vehicle is affected by TPI 2072849 and request a live OCDC test:
→ This checks whether 13.5–14.8 V is present on the 12 V system during active AC charging.

  2. If the test is negative: Request a replacement (in writing!)
    • Demand a goodwill replacement of the OCDC even without an active recall, since the same part is being preemptively replaced in the ID.4.

  3. Until replacement: Adjust your charging behavior
    • • Unplug the cable after charging ends or use a wallbox with auto-disconnect.
    • • Charge only up to 80% to avoid top-off cycles.
    • • Deactivate timer & pre-conditioning.
    • • After each charging session, drive briefly or switch on the ignition → actively recharges the 12V battery.

  4. Wait for software update
    • According to dealer bulletins, VW plans a fix (SW 4.2 or a hotfix in summer 2025) to correct the wallbox wake behavior.

Critical Note

  • The absence of an official recall for the ID.7 is likely due to a lack of reported cases – not due to the absence of the fault. The risk (no keyless function, no emergency call function) is the same as in the ID.4.
  • Replacing the 12V battery only treats the symptoms, not the cause – without a new OCDC, the problem will return shortly.
  • Please report issues officially to KBA, RDW, or NHTSA to help expedite a formal recall campaign.

Summary

Even though there is no official recall yet for the ID.7, internal documents (TPI 2072849) and many user reports suggest that the OCDC unit is just as susceptible as in the ID.4/Q4. The issue arises mainly during AC charging (11 kW) when the DC/DC converter shuts down too early due to software bugs. Have your OCDC checked or replaced specifically – and adjust your charging habits to avoid discharging the 12V battery.
