so i have a 96 golf gl, with the 2.0. I recently got it and have bypassed the security system, put in a thermostat, replaced the coil, plugs, cap, rotor and wires are in the mail. But on cold starts it has a rough idle and if you rev it up to 2 or 25 for a bit it goes away, like 20 seconds or so. it has a 'bouncy' feeling to the idle, not just a miss. just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what to check next? No CEL or codes, just had it in the shop for a safety inspection and such... Thanks for the help, oh, and it doesnt seem to have a high idle on cold start ups either. so when i start it when cold, the rpm's are only in the 1000 to 1100 range, not sure if thats the same for all vw's but worth mentioning.

it is, its is pretty bad, is shakes the car pretty good, then it goes away after that 20 or 30 seconds of warm up. then idles nicely. not perfectly, but then again it has 193 thousand miles on it. but a very acceptable idle after that.

Also, not sure if it is worth mentioning, but my gas mileage is not very good, just over 20 on the trip I took , and i just got the car so I dont know how long it has been this bad.
And on cold start ups I don't have a high idle at all, watched this morning and it started great then idled around 950 and loped as bad as usual, but no high idle while it was cold.

Mine does the same on cold starts... I rev it up to like 2 grand and it is like "bap bap bap bap bap bap" and then pow smooths right out.

LOVE to find out what that is all about. :K:

Mine is pictured below, and I too have a brand new ignition system. o2's and all.

hey guys what's up, just joined. I just picked up a 98 Jetta GL, 2.0. I think I might have the same problem as ryanmancl. I feel like my idle should be higher and smoother, and it doesn't seem as though there is a choke...but so far my gas mileage is good. My check engine light hasn't shown up, but i do get my oil light flashing even though everything seems ok in that regard.

I have another symptom to add... I get a jerk coming on and off the gas while leaving the clutch untouched. Does anybody think this is related to the idle not being high enough?

Is there a certain sensor that always goes bad on this motor that I should try to replace?

if the car was sitting around for a while, there could be water in the fuel... I would throw in a bottle of Heet. especially during the winter months when things warm up then cool down.

If water in the form of vapor seeps into your gas tank(from the atmosphere), and then cools down, it will turn into liquid water, and then get sucked into your fuel system along with the gas.

I noticed that after I Sea-Foamed it awhile back that it did it to less of an extent, but it was still there, however only faint.

I found something that has helped mine this weekend, I hooked up VagCom and I was messing around with it and found a test called output tests, it turns on and off injectors, evap system and the big one the idle control valve, I let it run for a few minutes on this part of the test and at first the clicks off the IAC was soft but after a while it made some good solid ones. After that it has idled a lot better. The valve was probably a little gummed up and needed to operate full stroke.

I replaced my entire PCV, all the tubes, clips, and grommets recently. Since I have done this it has not happened again. 2 months now, no lumpy idle on cold start. I read something about PCV's a long time ago, I only faintly remember the full extent of their job.

My old one had hairline cracks in it, and the plastic was breaking around the grommet on the Valve Cover.

I do know one thing though, if the bottom breather line is not connected to the complete PCV assembly, the damn thing won't run at all.
