Wet trunk

POTENTIALLY STUPID QUESTION :(

Ok, so i noticed the other day that my trunk was a bit wet and that it smelled musty or mildewy.
Finally had a dry day today so i opened it up, lifted the carpet to have a look. a fine dew of water had collected over the spare tire and the foam that holds the jack and tow hook etc. the underside of the carpet was also covered with a small layer of beaded water.

So i took it all out to dry it and spray it with a disinfectant to kill the mold.
I noticed once the tire was out, that there was a hole directly in the middle where the spare tires was. I assume this was meant to be plugged? I assumed maybe there was supposed to be a drain of some sort, but i think this is doing the opposite and letting moisture IN rather than draining it OUT

I found this guy:

Volkswagen Jetta IV 2.0 > Exterior > Body > Sealing Plug > ES#430323 PLUG - 8D0803583L

And i think that should do the trick, but im not sure if thats the right piece.

nope its a GLS, no spoiler
Im sure its that hole down there. Im just not 100 percent certain its not supposed to be like that. I have nothing to compare it with. I have heard that a plug can fall out somehow.

Silicone.

Also hows the trunk lid gasket? Does it look all flattened out?

Get a tube of silicone and seal the hole off.

The gasket is the rubber piece that goes around to seal the truck lid.

I'm trying to remember if mine was ever there or not. I seem to remember there being a hole in the bottom of my trunk but sealing it when I did my stereo install.

I think the hole might be there for drainage incase water does ever get in.

You could try getting a friend to soak the trunk lid with a hose, fold your seats down, and watch from the inside to see if thats the way water is getting it.

I know the one you are talking about.

When I did my stereo in my Jetta I removed the spare tire and all the tools/foam.

i have to say your best bet, have a friend spray your trunk, you shimmy in with the seats folded down, if you get wet, see where its coming in. if not. then you know its the hole in the bottom by the spare tire.

its your best way to diagnosis it

I agreee. Because I'd be willing to bet its the trunk gasket not the hole.

As far as I know every VW has that hole in the trunk and nobody else has moisture issues. That's alot of moisture to come up through a small hole.

The gasket around the edge? How much does that cost to replace/is it easy to replace?
Im hearing from a few people that its the likely cause. I might take you guys' advice and have someone spray it while i look for a leak. However, i doubt i will see a straight up leak because not much water really gets down there, and its a fine mist rather than a puddle or big wet spot.

you could use ninjas ultimate thing... rice..
but no if u have someone spray it while ur inside u should be able to feel it being wet. even if its a mist. it should take you 5 mins to swap out the weather stripping seal. literally pulls off the new one slides on. Done.
